South Carolina is a state in the United States. It was a British Colony from 1712 to 1776, after the Province of Carolina (1629 to 1712, named after Charles I of England) was divided into North and South Carolina in 1712, becoming a royal colony in 1719. South Carolina established seven districts in 1769 that replaced its original counties. South Carolina ratified the US Constitution in 1788, having various degrees of independence from 1776 to 1788. In 1785 South Carolina created counties again within these districts and in 1800 removed the districts altogether, but continued to refer to the counties as "districts" until 1868. South Carolina seceeded from the US in 1860 to join the Confederacy in 1861 until it ended in 1865 and was readmitted to the United States in 1868.
