He was a blacksmith that operated his own shop on rented land and later worked as a blacksmith for the county.
There was a lot of anger passed down in the family about this man, but I think enough time has passed that I can record it here. "He was mean as a snake" according to Marjorie Kersey and she couldn't stand him spitting chewing tobacco on the floor of her house. He is described as "an abusive alcoholic" by Lorita Blackstone. He had an affair and fathered other children while his wife was sick with TB. There is a famous story about him yelling at her to iron his shirt so he could go out on the town while she was sick and she died not long after. He died in a home because no one would take him in when he was older. The family even refused to bury him in the same graveyard as her.
